Doug Milhous and Lew Schmitt will describe the courses and programs at Shasta College related to computer networking and systems support. Particular emphasis will be on Microsoft and Cisco networking. The presentation will include an update on related industry certifications.
Doug Milhous is in his 11th year of teaching CIS classes at Shasta College. He primarily focuses on Cisco networking and relational databases. Prior to coming to Shasta College Doug worked for Citizens Utilities in an IT support role with wide ranging duties and responsibilities.
Doug has a masters degree in Computer Science from CSU Chico which he was awarded in 1983. Doug came to Redding in 1971 to take a job teaching math at the junior high level.
Lew Schmitt was born in Oregon, Illinois. He started working in a sheetmetal shop when he was 9 and worked in various construction trades until graduating from Rochelle Township High School. After high school he attended Wartburg College in Waverly, IA for three semesters before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He met his wife, Nancy, while attending Wartburg. They were married when she graduated and moved to San Diego, CA. Lew began his Navy career as an Electronics Technician, advancing to Chief Petty Officer. At that point he accepted a commission as a Limited Duty Officer, Electronics and advanced to Lieutenant Commander. Lew's Navy career spanned more than 22 years.
Upon retiring from the Navy in 1990, Lew accepted his current position to teach Computer Technology at Shasta College.
Lew's educational background began at Wartburg College. He has an Associate of Arts degree from Grossmont College in El Cajon, CA; a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration, Management Information Systems from National University, San Diego, CA. Lew has certifications in A+ Computer Repair Technician from CompTIA and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer from Microsoft. He also received extensive training in radar, radio, satellite communication, satellite navigation, and computer operation and maintenance while in the Navy.
Lew's computer experience began in 1972 working on a satellite navigation system, a forerunner of the today’s GPS devices. Lew built his first personal computer from a kit in 1979 and has been involved with microcomputers and networking ever since.
Lew and Nancy have a daughter, a son, and four grandchildren.
